Cowen & Company have predicted that Destiny 3 will launch in 2020, suggesting that Bungie and Activision’s recent parting of ways will be best for the franchise in the long run.

The research firm noted that the initial agreement was for a new Destiny game to launch every two years, although obviously this changed following the release of the first game, with Destiny 2 arriving three years later.

Furthermore, Cowen & Company mentioned a ‘growing divergence’ between Activision and Bungie, with the Destiny series failing to attract the ‘recurring revenue stream’ desired by the publishing behemoth.

In addition, it claims that Destiny 2 failed to broaden the appeal of the franchise by offering a more casual experience, while Forsaken didn’t quite win over lapsed fans despite its critical success.

However, the firm observed that the split is likely to benefit Destiny going forward.

‘Ultimately, we think this decision is probably for the best for Destiny as a franchise, as we think having two head cooks in the kitchen with somewhat divergent views created some issues with the development process and led the game down some blind alleys,’ the company wrote (via GameSpot).

‘Destiny was a worthwhile attempt by Activision to build another cornerstone franchise, one that just didn’t quite pan out as they had hoped (underlining once again the high difficulty of creating and managing a successful live service game business), in our view.’

Cowen & Company further noted that Bungie probably paid a fee in order to acquire the publishing rights to the series from Activision, although said it wouldn’t have been ‘enormously significant.’
