Deep Silver announced today that the release of Shenmue 3 has been pushed back to 2019.

Developed by former Sega legend Yu Suzuki’s Ys Net studio, the revenge-driven sequel has been delayed in order to benefit from additional polishing and to ensure the title is launched to the ‘high standards it deserves.’

Suzuki-san added that the extra development time will ‘allow us to deliver Shenmue 3 at its best. We promise to use this time to improve the quality of Shenmue 3.’

Shenmue 3 was originally announced at Sony’s E3 2015 press event, where Suzuki took to the stage to launch the game’s Kickstarter. The title was first pegged for a December 2017 launch before being pushed back to the second half of 2018.

Let’s hope they use the extra time to put a bit of sparkle into Ryo’s eyes so he looks less like a mannequin, eh?

Still, it’s not all bad news. Sega confirmed last month that it will release high-definition remasters of Shenmue I & II for PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One later this year, so that should give you plenty of time to catch up on Ryu Hazuki’s epic tale of sailor-searching and forklift racing.

Shenmue 3 is in development for PS4 and PC.
