The Last of Us: Part II’s creative director has revealed that Ellie will be the only playable character in the upcoming post-apocalyptic sequel.

Speaking with IGN, co-lead game designer Richard Cambrier was quizzed if players would be able to step into the shoes of any other characters, to which he replied, ‘We aren’t saying anything about that.’

Fair enough, mate.

Despite this, Neil Druckmann then quickly chimmed in saying, ‘Ellie is the only playable character in the game.’

While there’s chance Druckmann could be pulling our leg, he probably isn’t, as he would surely have kept mum if Ellie wasn’t the only playable role. He also strikes me as a chap who doesn’t bullshit.

Where this leaves Joel is anyone’s guess, although we imagine he’ll appear as a non-playable supporting character. Then again, maybe he’s already dead? We haven’t seen his face yet, and he only appeared briefly in the teaser trailer, where he spoke to Ellie off-screen.

Is he brown bread and just a conjuration of Ellie’s troubled mind? Who knows.

The Last of Us: Part II is currently in development exclusively for PlayStation 4, although a release date has yet to be confirmed. Check out the game in action.
