Game engine Unity has a bit of a bad rap for its graphical power – or lack thereof.

But there’s a new short film, Adam, which has been rendered in real-time using Unity that may change some people’s perception.

The short’s first section is available now to watch online – you can see it below. It tells the story of a humanoid robot awaking from a Matrix-like pod before being put to work but evil human overlords.

It looks very nice indeed.

Unity is widely-favoured among indie developers for its ease of use and cross-platform features. The engine is also very flexible, and is used for all manner of game genres and graphical styles.

2016 titles to use the engine include the beautiful story-lead adventure Firewatch, as well as the upcoming 2D side-scroller Cuphead and 3D platformer Yooka-Laylee.

Last year it was used in everything from Angry Birds 2 to Ori and the Blind Forest, and from Grow Home to Pillars of Eternity.

Unity may always struggle to match the might of game engines designed in-house by big third-party developers (Ubisoft has Snowdrop and Anvil, EA has Frostbite, while others use Epic’s Unreal Engine or Crytek’s CryEngine) but this new short showcases just how far Unity has come:
